Will God Bless America?

Lisa Veach Blog 27 0

Will God bless America? That depends. It depends on God’s sovereignty and on us. How does it depend on us?  2 Chronicles 7:14 states, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” I believe that many in this land are praying. But have we humbled ourselves before God, acknowledging that He is God, not us? Are we seeking His face, willing to listen to Him and do as He says? Most importantly, are we willing to confess our sins, repent of them, and really follow God?

When all this unrest began quite a few months ago, I kept sensing God urging me to pray that this nation would repent and leave its wicked ways. Are we (especially those of us who call ourselves Christians) prone to:

  • Lie, to cover a mistake or make people think better of us?
  • Cheat someone out of money or time owed at work?
  • Use God’s name to express a frustration?
  • Kill babies, even while they are in the womb?
  • Say wrong is right and right is wrong just to be socially accepted?
  • Deceive others?
  • Use others in sex trafficking?
  • Use pornography?
  • Have an affair, live with, or sleep with someone to whom we are not married?
  • Engage in sexual behavior with the same sex or animals? (Romans 1:18-32)
  • Steal from others or from God by withholding our tithes and offerings? (Malachi 3:6-12)
  • Lust for power, fame, wealth or another’s possessions?
  • Gossip?
  • Disrespect our parents?
  • Refuse to forgive?
  • Use others for our own gain?
  • Follow our own desires instead of God’s?
  • Look out for ourselves instead of helping others?

Deviating from living for God often negates God’s blessing. Throughout the Old Testament God told His people to live in obedience to Him and He would bless them. Those who did not were eventually disciplined. Only when they turned from their wickedness and sought God, were they reestablished.

If we have been or are doing anything wrong, we need to ask God to forgive us. Then we should stop doing it. If you are struggling, please seek competent spiritual help.

Are we serious about following God, or do we just want the benefits without an obedient relationship? I believe it is time for Christians to turn from our wicked ways, ask God for His forgiveness, and then sincerely live for Him. Are you willing?
