Hearing God in the Ice Storm

Lisa Veach Blog 0 0

No! Not an ice storm! I still had a thirty mile drive up a two-lane rural road to my home! The ice rain fell steadily on my windshield. It began coating it! What could I do? I turned my windshield wipers on high. I turned the defrost on high. “Oh God,” I cried, “Please help me!” I remembered some things my husband had told me years earlier about driving on the snow and ice. “Do not slam on your brakes. If you need to brake, do it gently.” “Don’t jerk the steering wheel.” “Do not accelerate too quickly. Keep a steady speed.” “Do not  go too fast. It is  hard to slow down or stop on the snow and ice.” Thank you, Lord, for bringing that back to mind.

Ahead I saw the steep hill I had to ascend. I knew I had to go fast enough to get up the hill, but how fast was that? “God, help me!” “Don’t go too fast,” He said to my heart. As I neared the top of the hill, He said, “Now slow down gently. Let up on the gas a bit.” I did. As I crested the hill, I was so glad I had done as God directed. There were bright red brake lights everywhere! They were across the road in various direction! I braked gently to avoid hitting a car sitting sideways in the road. “Thank you, Lord, I stopped in time!” I looked in the rear-view mirror to see if the car behind me was going to be able to stop. It did! So did the one behind that. “Thank you, Lord!”

Slowly I went forward down the road, continually asking God how fast or slow I should go. I followed His directions. Then I got to a fork in the road. One took me over mountains. The other down a curvy road by the river. Which way should I go? I was so stressed; I could not actually hear God’s voice. Then God helped me remember a neighbor who had slipped on the mountain road on ice. He now had permanent brain damage. I chose the river route. Ten more miles to go! I listened all the way.

When I finally pulled into our driveway, my white-knuckled hands were almost frozen to the steering wheel. I sat there numb. Then I said, “Thank you, Lord. You got me home over thirty miles of ice. Thank you for helping me every mile of the way!”
