Have you ever raised chickens? I haven’t, but my mother did. She liked to tell this story about their little hen.
This tiny hen was a terrific mother, so they kept her to raise frying chickens. They would quietly gather her eggs and then replace them with some eggs producing fledglings of a much larger variety. The mother raised the baby chickens as her own. She was very protective of them – even when they were “gangly teenage” roosters who were much larger than her. When danger threatened she would excitedly call them to the protection of her wings! Unfortunately, at that age, they were so big, she rode around on top of them, with her wings outstretched, determine to protect them. It was quite a funny sight!
When Jesus entered Jerusalem shortly before His death, He cried over the city. The people there had killed and stoned those He had sent to them to help them find their way back to God. He then used this analogy of a mother hen protecting her babies to refer to Himself. He said, “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!”
Jesus’s heart is for us. He longs to have us come to Him so He can care for us and protect us. He does not want the consequences that come to us when we have turned away from Him and are not under His personal care. Won’t you ask Him to be your Lord and Savior and come under His protective care? He longs for you to come to Him. He offers the ultimate care and protection – now and eternally!
