How often does a sparrow come within three feet of a person and stay there, hopping, drinking, and not flying away? Almost never! And yet, God brought a sparrow to within three feet of me to teach me a lesson.
All morning, during the time I would normally have my quiet time with God, I had been flying around trying to take care of many numerous tasks. Finally I was seated on the lawn by our little waterfall, trying to unwind, trying to calm down and trying to get an intimate time with God.
I thought how God had met me there the previous morning as I had sat quietly before Him. I had felt His peace and presence. He had prepared me for a full day. I was strengthened, focused and ready to walk with Him through that day.
Today, I was stressed, wound up and unfocused. Would I get unwound? Would I get focused? Would I be able to sense God’s wonderful presence and peace this day? Then God sent a sparrow. It flew down next to me and our little waterfall. It flitted and hopped from stone to stone trying to get a drink from the splashes on the rocks surrounding the little pond. I could see that if he would just go to the other side of the pond, he could get on a lower rock and get all the water he desired.
The sparrow was so like me – flitting and flying around trying to get a drink and not getting satisfied. I was flitting and flying around trying to get things done and it brought little satisfaction. I was doing this before I had sat in God’s presence and drank from His Spirit to receive His peace and direction for my day. If the sparrow had stopped and gone to the other side of the pond, he would have received the water he desired. In the same way, I needed to make God and time in His presence my first priority in order to walk in a more full awareness of His presence, peace and guidance.
Lord, help me order each day according to Your will. Thank you for reminding me with a little sparrow that I need to put You first. Time with You brings the peace, direction and awareness of Your presence that brings satisfaction to my soul; a satisfaction that nothing else can give.
Praying for the best priority,
