Would you be willing to speak before a president or world leader if you did not feel confident in your speaking ability? Would you be willing to speak with a speech impediment? In Exodus 3-4, Moses told God that he did not wish to go to Pharaoh, the ruler of all of Egypt, for he was, “slow of speech and of tongue.” We are not sure if that indicated a speech impediment, but it may have. Minimally, Moses did not feel confident to stand before Pharaoh and request that Pharaoh release the Israelite slaves. He wanted no part of it.
Would you want to go back to a location where you had done a horrendous act? Exodus 2:11-15 relates how Moses killed an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew slave. Once Moses realized that people knew what he had done, he fled from Pharaoh and went to the land of Midian. He was no longer safe in Egypt.
Yet, when that Pharaoh died, Moses did end up serving God and asking the new Pharaoh to release the Israelites. What made him go? As God and Moses spoke, God assured Moses that He would be with him to help him. God identified Himself in a way Moses would recognize, telling him that He was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He told Moses His name, which is, “I AM.” It is the Hebrew verb, “to be.” It expresses His self-existence, eternal presence and unchangeable nature. He told Moses what He would do to cause Pharaoh to release the Israelites. God preformed miracles using Moses’ rod. He also provided Aaron, Moses’ brother, to help him and to speak for him. God answered every fear and provided for every need of Moses!
Do you feel inadequate to serve God? Do you feel like you have done something so awful, God would never want you? God loves and wants everyone to be part of his family. If God specifically chose a murderer to be His mighty servant, He will definitely welcome you. Just ask Him to forgive you and be the Lord of your life. Then follow Him. You never know what task God might have for you. He will equip you for whatever He asks you to do. Most importantly, He will be with you, helping, encouraging, and guiding you each step of the way. Won’t you offer yourself to Him today?
