With all the unrest in our nation, I have been a bit fearful. Have you? It feels like some of the things we have counted on are being shaken. As I thought about how there are changes in our nation, I came across Psalm 46. Verse two states, “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth shakes and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” I don’t know about you, but I think I would be fearful in the middle of an earthquake violent enough to send mountains falling into the sea! Yet, what is the writer of this Psalm calling us to do? He is saying we are not to be fearful – even in the middle of a violent earthquake – even when all that we have counted on as security is shaken. Why not? It is God, and not the temporal things of this world, who should be our security. He is our refuge and strength. He is the One who can help us when our world and its supposed security is falling apart.
How do we get to that place of security when everything is falling apart? First, we are to remember that God is still enthroned in heaven (verses 4-7). Though things may appear to be falling apart on earth, He can utter one word, and things can change on the earth. He is that powerful! Because He is that powerful, He is able to help us. Second, we are to remember that if we have made Him our God, He promises to be our place of safety in the middle of calamity. His presence will be closely with us to help us. As we turn to Him, His Spirit will guide us. Third, (verses 10-11), He invites us to change our focus from the calamity around us to Him. He invites us to quiet ourselves and focus on Him. As we do, we remember that He is God. He is the One ruling over all the nations and the earth. He is the all-powerful One. He is in control and He is trustworthy. This all-powerful One is with us! He promises to be our safety in the storm. We just need to turn to Him, listen, trust Him, and follow His leading. Won’t you do that? If we do, we will find our stability in His loving, powerful, trustworthy presence.
